Job Summary

The Clinical Perfusionist I is responsible for operating and monitoring heart-lung machines and other perfusion equipment during various cardiothoracic surgeries, including coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), heart valve repair/replacement, and other related procedures. This position involves assisting the surgical team in maintaining optimal patient circulation and physiological function during surgery. The Clinical Perfusionist I ensures that all equipment is properly calibrated and functioning and provides accurate documentation of perfusion parameters and patient data.

Job Responsibilities 1

Operates heart-lung machines and other related devices during surgeries, ensuring proper regulation of patient blood flow, oxygenation, temperature, and other critical physiological functions.

Monitors the patient’s hemodynamic status throughout the procedure, adjusting perfusion equipment as necessary to maintain optimal function.

Prepares and calibrates extracorporeal circulation equipment, such as blood pumps, oxygenators, and temperature management devices, prior to surgery.

Ensures all equipment is in proper working order before, during, and after surgeries.

Identifies and troubleshoots any issues related to perfusion equipment during surgery.

Responds promptly and effectively to emergency situations, making necessary adjustments to equipment and perfusion parameters to ensure patient safety and stability.

Job Responsibilities 2

Works closely with cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other members of the surgical team to optimize patient outcomes.

Provides real-time feedback on the patient’s condition, advising on necessary adjustments to the perfusion circuit.

Accurately documents perfusion parameters, including blood flow rates, oxygenation levels, and other critical data throughout the surgery.

Ensures that all records are complete, precise, and maintained in accordance with hospital protocols and regulations.

Assists in the process of weaning the patient off the heart-lung machine and transitioning to normal cardiovascular function.

Monitors the patient's condition during the transition phase to ensure stability.

Job Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge of how to operate and troubleshoot heart-lung machines and other perfusion equipment during surgeries.

Understanding of medical terminology, especially related to cardiovascular and pulmonary systems.

Ability to monitor and adjust machines to maintain proper patient circulation and oxygenation during surgery.

Ability to respond to changing conditions during surgery, such as a change in blood pressure or oxygen levels, and to adjust equipment as necessary.

Job Experience

Minimum of 3 years of hands-on clinical experience under the supervision of licensed perfusionists.
