Job Summary

The Supervisor – Microbiology and Virology will oversee the commissioning of the relevant sections including the commissioning of equipment, IT systems, recruitment, on-boarding, and training of staff, and preparing policies and procedures in accordance with CAP-ISO15189 and JCI. They will be part of a team of Biomedical Scientists/Technologists delivering high quality services and will have operational oversight within the department. They will be the professional lead in their area responsible for providing expert advice to service users.

Job Responsibilities 1

Provides professional and scientific management for the services within portfolio.  

Assists in ensuring achievement of and maintaining CAP, JCI and ISO-15189 standards in the section. 

Performs analytical and clinical audits as necessary to support the Hospital audit program, and CAP-ISO15189 and JCI accreditation. 

Ensures that all audit items are documented, any conclusion presented, and remedial action implemented as appropriate. 

Works with the Quality department to develop systems to deliver quality services which satisfy CAP-ISO15189 and JCI standards. 

Develops and implements robust systems for risk assessment for all activities within the department. 

Identifies resource requirements and informs the Operations Manager. 

Works with the manager to prepare and submit business plans where required for service development and ensures successful implementation within budget and time scale targets. 

Ensures areas under direct management comply with the Hospital health and safety policies and works with technical staff to cascade changes affecting the laboratory health and safety strategy. 

Responsible for the recruitment and retention of suitably qualified staff.

Job Responsibilities 2

Ensures the provision of appropriate staff training and development.  

Ensures the continued provision of an effective 24/7 service where appropriate. 

Uses department IT systems as appropriate to gather, analyze and present statistics and data for management, clinical or financial purposes.   

Oversees and participates in the validation of results as appropriate. 

Actively participates in the technical and analytical work of the section. 

Investigates and takes action to resolve the problems with analytical methods and equipment. 

Takes responsibility for the maintenance and safe use of equipment within the section.  

Helps ensure the provision of a high quality, cost-effective service with the emphasis on quality assurance in all aspects of the section supervised by monitoring and audit of internal quality control. 

Uses Laboratory Information System (LIS) to generate workload statistics, run queries, and assess quality of data according to defined criteria. 

Participates in the external quality assurance schemes that the department subscribes to.  

Carries out corrective action as advised when the quality control procedures fail. 

Develops common working practices within the disciplines and standardization of methods and SOPs where appropriate.

Job Knowledge & Skills

Extensive functional knowledge and clinical experience in clinical laboratories. 

Knowledge of and experience with clinical laboratory safety and risks. 

Knowledge of ISO 15189/CPA/CAP/JCI standards and guidelines. 

Demonstrated strong analytical and decision-making skills. 

Experience in commissioning laboratory services and programs. 

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 

Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite 

Fluency in written and spoken English

Job Experience

Minimum 10 years’ experience in clinical laboratories as a licensed Clinical Scientist or Technologist (required)

Minimum 5 years as a Laboratory Manager, or Supervisor in a CAP or ISO15189 laboratory (required)

Minimum 3 years in GCC (preferred)
