Job Summary

    The Respiratory Therapist (III) is a specialized health care practitioner who assesses, educates, treats, and offers preventive and health care promotion to patients with cardiopulmonary deficiencies across the care continuum. The Respiratory Therapist is competent in general respiratory procedures including but not limited to management of both invasive and non-invasive ventilation, arterial punctures, assist in bronchoscopy, management of tracheostomies, ambulatory procedures (PFT, spirometry, measurements), and emergency procedures. The RT works generally out of the Intensive Care Unit and collaborates with both medical and nursing leadership in care delivery and service line coverage, but may care for patients’ site-wide, based on clinical need. RT coverage may be provided in the inpatient units, neonatal ICU, emergency department and outpatient clinics.

Job Responsibilities 1

    Performs adult and pediatric/neonatal respiratory procedures including set-up and monitoring of free flow oxygen therapy systems, blend aerosol systems, aerosol systems, volume expansion techniques/devices, bronchial hygiene techniques/devices and CPR.

    Management of ventilator systems including setup and monitoring of continuous invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilator systems, specialty gases and related monitoring and supportive adjuncts used on patient populations.

    Performs emergency procedures including set-up and monitoring of adult invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilator systems and related supportive adjuncts, adult arterial puncture for blood gas analysis, adult and pediatric/neonatal respiratory procedures.

    Performs adult arterial punctures, obtaining and interpretation of arterial blood gas.

    Assist with bronchoscopy procedures.

    Works in both general and specialized areas including, but not limited to Emergency, Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

    Takes an active role within the development of the Rehabilitation Services, delivering In-Service training, facilitating/delivering the training and development of non-therapy staff and sharing knowledge and skills where appropriate.

    Manages own time and caseload with an awareness of limitation of the Therapy Service and a knowledge of specialist facilities and appropriate referral and provides support to colleagues and direct reports to manage their caseload.

    Acts as a key figure within the Hospital, in the provision of specialist knowledge and skill in the respiratory assessment, management and treatment of patients, within a broad scope of practice.

    Adheres to all departmental and facility wide policies, procedures, risk assessments and processes in the interests of maintaining a safe and effective work environment and promoting the highest quality patient care experience.

Job Responsibilities 2

    Practices clear, concise, and timely documentation of clinical records using a variety of digital applications and IT systems.

    Advocates the benefits of respiratory therapy where necessary, using clinical reasoning, evidence practice examples, recognized international guidelines/care standards.

    Takes responsibility for health, safety and security and day to day maintenance of equipment and working environment, reporting issues via appropriate channels.

    Maintains appropriate infection control practices and training, to maintain the safety of patients and colleagues.

    Undertakes clinical and non- clinical audit tasks, as assigned, aimed at informing the facility leadership on performance in critical areas as deemed necessary.

Job Knowledge & Skills

    Experience of working across a wide range of settings including ED, ICU, Neonatology, and wards. Including the use of mechanical ventilation, interpreting of blood gases, administering of aerosol medication and delivery of airway clearance techniques.

    Evidence of appropriate continued professional development.

    Expertise in the application of evidence-based practice.

    Previous experience working in a multi-disciplinary care team.

    Experience of delivering teaching and education to the RT and wider team.

Job Experience

    Minimum 6 years post qualifying experience

    For Qatari Nationals, Qatar universities graduates, offspring of Qatari women or offspring of residents, they are required to complete a training period of one year under supervision of a licensed healthcare practitioner (Refer to DHP Circular No24/2020)

    Preferred: Minimum 3 years work experience in the Gulf Cooperation Council
